TI Introduces High-Speed, 14-bit SAR Data Converters for Advanced Signal Processing Applications

TUCSON, Ariz., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) today introduced a pair of high-speed, 14-bit successive approximation (SAR) analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) from the company's Burr-Brown product line. The devices are ideal for advanced signal processing applications which require high speed, high precision and low power, such as optical networking, portable medical systems, spectrum analyzers, data acquisition, imaging and telecommunications. (See http://www.ti.com/sc04057 .)

The ADS7891 offers true 14-bit no missing code performance at 3 mega samples per second (MSPS) with only 85mW power consumption. Key features include 78dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), -88dB total harmonic distortion (THD), 1.5LSB linearity, 1.5mV offset and a 14-bit parallel interface with an additional byte mode that provides easy interface to 8-bit processors.

The ADS7890 is a 14-bit, 1.25MSPS ADC with an SPI(TM) compatible serial interface. The ADS7890 features 45mW power dissipation, 77.5dB SNR, -95dB THD, 1.5LSB linearity and 1.5mV offset.

"The ADS7891 offers the industry's best dynamic performance while matching the highest sampling rate of 3MSPS for 14-bit SAR ADCs. The ADS7890 features the best dynamic performance in a serial, 14-bit SAR ADC with 1.25MSPS operation, thus providing excellent performance with a minimized interface," said Tony Chang, strategic marketing engineer for TI's data acquisition products. "Furthermore, the ADS7891 and ADS7890 successfully enhance TI's industry-leading family of pin-compatible, high-speed SAR ADCs, giving customers comprehensive upgrade paths from 1.25MSPS to 4MSPS and from 12-bit to 18-bit resolution."

In comparison to other converter architectures, SAR-based ADCs have the advantage of no latency conversion, which is ideal for multiplexed or servo- control applications. Additionally, the DC performance of these devices, especially offset and offset drift, is exceptional compared to other converter types operating at these conversion rates.

The ADS7891 and ADS7890 offer designers a complete solution by integrating an internal reference and reference buffer. The devices have a pseudo- differential, unipolar input range (0V to 2.5V) common to many high-speed ADCs. A nap mode reduces power dissipation to 10mW and a power down mode consumes only 10uW.

Both devices are optimized to work with TI's high-performance amplifiers to achieve high-performance designs. The THS4031 and THS4211 are ideal input signal conditioning and drive amplifiers.

Availability, Packaging and Pricing

The ADS7891 and ADS7890 are packaged in a 48-lead TQFP, and are available now from TI and its authorized distributors. Both devices are priced from $10.50 in 1,000 piece quantities (suggested resale price).
